- The expansion tank coolant hose on your BMW E46 3 series with the M52 and M54 engine is the hose used to fill your engine cooling system through the expansion tank. It also feeds the return coolant to the expansion tank as the engine warms and coolant expands.
- Eventually, the rubber of the hose and o-rings that seal it to the expansion tank and coolant pipe degrade leading to leaks that can cause insufficient coolant in the cooling system to keep the engine from overheating.
